I'm here at a spot known to the world as Ground Zero. Behind me, the former site of the World Trade Center is being redeveloped. It will be in part a memorial to the victims from more than 80 nations who died here the morning of Sept. 11, 2001.

Many of us will never forget the images of that day. But what is almost unknown is what happened here that afternoon at 5:25 pm. For that story you'll have to follow me several hundred yards to the north to the once and future site of the building known as 7 World Trade Center.

Behind me is the sequel to World Trade Center Building Number Seven, which is being rebuilt and already reaches 40 stories. In addition to a variety of financial service companies, it housed regional offices of the Department of Defense, the CIA, and the U.S. Secret Service, which occupied two floors.
And right in the middle, on the 23rd floor, New York City's Office of Emergency Management. The OEM was a state-of-the-art disaster emergency control center. It had its own air, water and fuel supplies. Its windows were designed to withstand winds of up to 160 miles per hour.
Just the kind of central command post needed that day. But with New York City experiencing the greatest emergency in its history the building and the emergency command center were evacuated at 9:30 a.m.
The building appears to have sustained only superficial damage from the collapses of the nearby towers. Before Sept. 11 no modern steel skyscraper had ever collapsed due to fire.

Limited fires were noticed on certain floors, fires which should easily have been extinguished by the building's sprinkler system. Or could have been extinguished by firefighters. These small fires continued for some time, not growing or diminishing, as if they were controlled.

And then, at 5:25, Building 7 fell straight down.

It looked like a demolition. And this is what the building's owner, Larry Silverstein, appears to be saying in a 2002 documentary.

Imagine this whole area on that day. The panic, the confusion. Access streets clogged with emergency vehicles, trucks, abandoned cars. Could a demolition team plan access this building, wire it for demolition, and execute the controlled demolition of a 47 storey, steel frame structure? Between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m.?
A demolition of this magnitude takes a minimum of two weeks to plan and install, and that's rushing it.
Building #7 fell neatly into its own footprint. One of the agencies that ended up in the rubble was the Securities and Exchange Commission, which oversees financial fraud on Wall Street. It lost its offices and the paperwork on 200+ insider trading and equity manipulation cases. Its operations were crippled for six months just at the time when it would have taken the lead in investigating reports of 9/11-related insider trading.
Silverstein seems to confirm that it was a demolition. Preparations for a demolition would have had to be done prior to September 11th.
The report by FEMA – the Federal Emergency Management Agency – concluded … "The cause of the collapse of Building Number 7 is unknown at this time."
The Kean Commission sidestepped any mention of the Building 7 collapse.
The demolition of Building 7 remains "a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma."
